Dr. James (Jim) Holt is a respected geographer and leader of scientific and technical teams. His expertise includes geographic information science, cartography, urban geography, chronic disease epidemiology and surveillance, and public administration. He earned his PhD in Geography from the University of Georgia. He was recognized as one of CDC's premier geospatial science experts – often sought out for consultation and research collaborations. He successfully guided the implementation of pioneering small area estimation methodology for population health surveillance. He authored over 80 peer reviewed publications and delivered dozens of invited presentations during his tenure. Jim retired from the CDC in 2019 after 27 years of service. He also is a retired Naval Flight Officer with the rank of Commander, having served a total of 25 years of active and reserve duty in the US Navy.
